Abstract

Territorial development in Costa Rica has been a widely unequal issue, characterized by a notable concentration of resources and progress in areas such as the Greater Metropolitan Area (GAM). This trend is due to historical, geographical, and political factors that have favored, to some extent, the country’s central region since colonial times, especially during the coffee-growing era. As a result, economic, educational, and even health disparities have emerged between the GAM area and the rest of the country’s regions.
