Abstract

THIS ARTICLE PROVIDES A SUMMARY OF THE PROGRESS ACHIEVED IN CENTRAL AMERICAN INTEGRATION, IN PARTICULAR, THE ELIMINATION OF TARIFF AND NON-TARIFF BARRIERS TO INTRA-REGIONAL FREE TRADE AND THE ESTABLISHMENT OF A UNIFORM TARIFF FOR THIRD COUNTRIES. IT ALSO DISCUSSES THE IMPORTANCE OF PROTECTIONISM IN INDUSTRIALIZED COUNTRIES AGAINST CENTRAL AMERICAN EXPORTS AND THE COMPATIBILITY OF TRADE NEGOTIATIONS FOR THE OPENING OF THESE MARKETS WITH THE CENTRAL AMERICAN INTEGRATION PROCESS.
