Abstract

COSTA RICA'S RICE SECTOR IS APPROACHED FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF GLOBAL COMMODITY CHAINS, GEREFFI (1994). RICE PRODUCTION WAS SELF-SUFFICIENT UNTIL THE 1980S, BUT IS NOW THREATENED BY THE PHENOMENA OF GLOBALIZATION AND ECONOMIC LIBERALIZATION, WHICH HAVE RESULTED IN 40% OF THE RICE REQUIRED FOR DOMESTIC CONSUMPTION BEING IMPORTED.
